Strains & Sprains

Is it a strain or a sprain?
Strains and sprains are injuries resulting from sport, everyday activities or accidents.
A strain is the tear, over-stretching or ‘pulling’ of a tendon or muscle (e.g. the back or a hamstring). Symptoms include pain, muscle spasm and weakness.  There may be swelling, cramping, inflammation and some loss of mobility.
A sprain is the tear or stretching of a ligament (e.g. ankle). Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising and loss of mobility or use of the joint. Symptoms will vary in intensity, depending on the severity.

Can strains and sprains be prevented?
Yes, to avoid strains and sprains you should stretch everyday and warm up before any physical activity and cool down with stretches afterwards.

Should I treat a strain or a sprain straight away?
Yes, the sooner the better! Early (first 24-48 hours) treatment should involve what we refer to as RICER Therapy:
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, Referral to your Guardian Pharmacist.
Applying Guardian Anti-Inflammatory Gel* every 4 hours to strains and sprains can assist in reducing pain and swelling.
