What is hay fever?
It is an allergic reaction to everyday particles in the air. These trigger a response which causes a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and red, itchy or watery eyes.
Why is my hay fever worse in spring?
Hay fever can occur all year round but is most common during spring and early summer when
pollens from grasses, trees and weeds are at a peak. Less seasonal triggers include house dust mites, animal fur or mould spores.
How can I prevent hay fever?
Try to identify and avoid contact with substances that trigger hay fever. It may also help to:
- Stay indoors on windy, high pollen days
- Wash bed linen regularly in hot water
- Select garden plants carefully
- Limit exposure to irritating cosmetics, smoke, paint and sprays
What can I do to treat hay fever?
Hay fever can make you feel miserable. If left untreated it can impact on sleep, mood, learning and work.
Although there are no cures, talk to your local Guardian pharmacist about the range of available treatments to help relieve symptoms and make you feel more comfortable.
