Sun damage
Why do Australians suffer high rates of skin cancer?
Australia has high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation but, until recently, we’ve done too little to protect our skin and it’s hard to believe we ever ‘sun-baked’ covered in oil!
What causes sun damage?
We now know a small amount of ultraviolet radiation (UV) can cause skin damage, and sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes.
What are the signs of sun damage
- Sunburn
- Blisters & peeling
- Pain or irritation of the eyes from UV
- Tans, sunburn freckles & ‘liver’ spots
What causes skin cancer?
Long term sun exposure and sunburn cause damage to skin cells, which can eventually lead to skin cancer.
Severe sunburn and childhood sun exposure increases the risk. Skin type and family history are also key factors.
How can I protect my skin from the sun?

- Dress your kids in UV protective swim wear and shirts

How do I know if I have skin cancer?
Inspect your skin. Look for spots that are new or have changed colour, size or shape. See your doctor if you notice anything unusual. Skin cancers can usually be cured if treated early.
