GASTROENTERITIS
What is it?
Each year thousands of children will suffer from some variety of gastroenteritis (gastro).
Gastro is an illness triggered by infection and inflammation of the digestive system. It can be caused by a range of different germs, however the most common cause is a viral or bacterial infection.
Gastro is highly contagious, easily spread to others and is more common among babies and young children. Babies under six month of age should be checked by a GP immediately as they can dehydrate quickly.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms may include:
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhea (runny or watery poo)
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Fever
How do I manage gastroenteritis?
Children with mild gastro can be looked after at home. They need to consume lots of fluids including water, re hydration products, formula or breast milk to replace the fluid lost through vomiting and diarrhea.
Your Guardian pharmacist recommends that children do not consume drinks with a high amount of sugar as they can exacerbate dehydration. Please speak to your GP or Guardian pharmacist if symptoms persist or worsen.
