VACCINATION AND IMMUNE HEALTH

What is it?

Influenza is the most common vaccine-preventable disease in Australia. Although it can be a mild disease, it can also cause very serious illness in otherwise healthy people. In some cases it requires hospitalisation and in worst case scenarios it may lead to death.

Influenza affects people of all ages, however an annual vaccination is recommended for every child older than six months of age. An influenza vaccination is particularly recommended for children aged six months to five years.

It is recommended that we receive an influenza vaccine every year. Children aged six months to nine years who are receiving the influenza vaccine for the first time should receive two doses four weeks apart.

General Vaccination Schedule

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way of protecting children against harmful diseases before they come into contact with them. Immunisation not only protects individuals but also others in the community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

In Australia, there is a recommended schedule of when vaccinations should be given to ensure a long and healthy life. Use the checklist to ensure your child’s vaccination profile is up to date.

If you have questions about the safety and usefulness of vaccines talk to your Guardian pharmacist.
